8C10.65 - Spiral Galaxy Arm Formation
To demonstrate how rotational motion in a plane can cause spiral arms of a galaxy to form.
Fill the bowl with water. Put the turn table on a momentary contact switch to allow for easy on/off controls. Shine a UV light onto the bowl of water. Prepare an eye dropper full of fluorescent tattoo ink. Set up a camera to see the top of the bowl of spinning water.
Put the camera feed onto the screen. Turn on the UV light source. Start the bowl of water spinning up. Once it is at full speed, drop 2-3 droplets of tattoo ink into the center of the bowl of water and watch how the dye spirals out similar in shape to the arms of a spiral galaxy.
