Title8A60.60 - Exoplanets - Why Direct Detection Fails
    Objective

To show how impossible it is to see light reflected directly off of an exoplanet is.

    Assembly Instructions

Set the frequency generator and 1K lumen strobe light so that it doesn't appear to be blinking and turn it up to a bright value (1000Hz at 3-3.2V) .  Place the 750W light bulb in front of the LED heatsink, slightly to the right or left of the LED so the LED shines through the bulb, but is not obscurred by the filament when seen from the front. Make sure nothing touches the light bulb (including wires).  (depending on instructor, the variac can be preset to the final brightness value so operation is as easy as flipping a switch)

    Operation Instructions

Set the frequency generator and 1K lumen strobe light so that it doesn't appear to be blinking and turn it up to a bright value (1000Hz at 3-3.2V) . Then when ready, use a variac to turn up the 750W light bulb and see how that light drowns out the light of the strobe.  This shows that direct detection will not work since the stars are much brighter than the planets orbiting them. (depending on instructor, the variac can be preset to the final brightness value so operation is as easy as flipping a switch)
