Assembly Instructions

​Grab a continuous light source and on/off switch, requested spectrum tubes, and spectrum tube power supplies.

When putting tubes into the power supply, hold the tube by the bottom portion and insert it into the bottom electrode first, press down, and then insert the top portion of the tube into the top electrode. It is safer to operate it this way incase a tube breaks, this is the least likely way to get hurt.

While in transit, lay the power supplies on their side to reduce the chance of damage. Tubes can be transported in the power supply or in the protective case.

**Whenever the Hydrogen tube is used, the power supply must be connected to a timer set for 30 second operation. ​Inform instructors that there is 5kV AC across the power supplies.**

Analysis/Information

​There are a number of gas discharge tubes available that when excited by the power supply, give off atomic spectra. The spectra can be viewed with diffraction gratings, but the students must be as close to the tubes as possible.
