These two simple telescopes demonstrate the two basic systems of refracting telescopes. The longer one is made of two convex lenses and produces a magnified inverted image (the classical refractor, Kepler-type). The shorter scope has a convex lens for the objective and a concave eyepiece and produces a magnified upright image (Galilean refractor). The magnification of each is about the same, but the classical system has a larger field of view. ​
