A small hand cranked generator which uses U shaped horseshoe magnets to produce its field has its output connected across a large neon bulb. If the generator is cranked quickly, both halves of the bulb appear to be on. However, if the generator is run slowly, the two halves will alternately go on and off, showing that the output is AC. ​
