Title5K30.25 - V vs I in a Transformer Primary and Secondary
Objective

Demonstrate the change of inductance and current on the Priamary vs the voltage rise in the secondary of a transformer as the inductance of the transformer is changed

StatusAvailable
Assembly Instructions

Normal operation has one 100W light bulb attached parallel to the primary (plugged into AC switch). A second 100W light bulb is hooked to the secondary. When the AC switch is turned on and the variac slowly ramped up, you should see the effect of either the step up or step down values. The comparison is voltage into the first light bulb vs. the voltage into the second light bulb.

Second possible operation is to hook the first 100W light bulb in series with the primary (going through the Volt output of the AC switch). This causes the current to be limited by the light bulb. As a result, the second light bulb will receive less power. The comparison is the limited current output of the first light bulb vs. the voltage output of the second light bulb that is limited by the first.

Operation Instructions

Instructions
Turn on the power switch to the transformer assembly with the top core piece removed. Note that the Primary series bulb illuminates brightly and the Secondary bulb does not illuminate at all, as the transformer has very low inductance .Slowly slide the top core across the two ends of the core and note that as the magnetic flux is contained in the core the Primary bulb gets dimmer and the Secondary bulb illuminates.
