Title5K20.32 - Solenoid Field Divergence
Objective

To demonstrate the effect of a magnetic field on a conductor suspended around a solenoid.

StatusAvailable
Assembly Instructions

Set up the transformer effects assembly on its side with the large aluminum ring suspended from a string around the assembly.  Depending on the position of the ring, the magnetic field of the solenoid will induce a magnetic field in the ring whose sign will depend on where the ring is suspended.  If the ring is lower than half way, it will be accelerated towards the base.  If the ring is higher than half way, it will be accelerated towards the top of the solenoid.

Operation Instructions

Position the suspended ring on one side of the half-way mark.  Turn on the power and watch the induced eddy currents cause the ring to move in response to the magnetic field produced by the solenoid.  Depending on if you are lower than half way or above half way will determine which direction the ring will move.
