5H40.61 - Current Carrying Wire Wrapping Itself Around a Magnet
Demonstrate the force on a current carrying wire in a diverging or non-uniform magnetic field.
A long loose light wire is suspended along the length of a vertical electromagnet. When the current is applied, the wire cuts the diverging field lines from the solenoid causing it to try to move in a circular path around the solenoid resulting in it winding up around the magnet. If the direction of the current is reversed, the wire unwraps itself and winds the other way.
