Connect the stiff wire in series with a switch to the battery. When the current is turned on, the compass needle is deflected so that it is perpendicular to the wire.

A simple circuit is made of a D battery, a momentary contact switch, and banana cables. A clear compass is arranged such that when there is no current, the needle and wire are aligned. When current flows, the compass needle is deflected nearly perpendicular to the wire. Placing the compass above or below the wire causes deflection in opposite directions.
