Title5C10.20 - Effect of a Dielectric and Spacing on a Capacitor
Objective

Show the effect of spacing and different dielectrics between the plates of a capacitor.

Assembly Instructions

Instructions
Use the capacitor with the insulated plate connected to a projection electroscope and set it so that it just clears the dielectric plate. Place a piezio charger or static charge with a rod or any other suitable generator on the plate connected to the electroscope, watching that you do not get too near to maximum deflection as the electroscope becomes very insensitive in this region and will tend to spark internally. Now, carefully insert the dielectric plate, noting that the potential decreases since the charge is being held constant. Then remove the plate and observe that the electroscope returns to its original value.
