Title5A10.13 - Static Balloon
Objective

Demonstrate electrostatic charge by charging a balloon using the triboelectric effect and then induce an electrostatic charge

on a nearby object creating an attraction force.

StatusAvailable
Assembly Instructions

Use Balloon pump to inflate a small colorful balloon. Tie a knot to seal it off.  Attach an ant clip (or bulldog clip) to the balloon to keep it from drifting away until the professor is ready to use it.  Provide a piece of fur to use for charging the balloon.

Analysis/Information

Charging of the balloon utilizes the difference in electronegativity of a materials constituent atoms called the triboelectric effect. Charge is added or removed by rubbing the balloon on an object with a difference in electronegavity of its surface atoms.
