4E20.40 - Marshmellow Vacuum
To demonstrate Boyle's law using a vacuum pump, bell jar, and partially inflated balloon. **With notice to purchase items, a marshmellow or shaving cream can also be used in place of the balloon.**
Connect the vacuum pump to the bell jar assembly. Line up the o-ring around the hole in the bottom plate. Place the screen over the hole of the bottom plate and place the raised petri dish above that. Put the partially inflated balloon, marshmellow, or blob of shaving cream on the petri dish. Carefully put the glass container over the petri dish and on top of the o-ring. Place the metal cage around the glass for safety.
With the partially inflated balloon, marshmellow, or blob of shaving cream on the petri dish, carefully place the glass bell jar over the petri dish and on time of the o-ring. Place the metal cage around the glass bell jar for safety. Turn on the vacuum pump and watch the object expand inside the chamber. Be sure to not get the material sucked up into the vacuum pump or it will break the pump.
