Title2C40.u1a - Laminar Motion - Beaker Size
Objective

A line of dye in glycerin is slowly rotated into a sheet then back into a line.  The viscosity of the glycerin is high enough that the motion is laminar and the apparent mixing of dye and fluid is reversible.

Assembly Instructions

Overview:  Two cameras can be used with good results, one from the side and the other from the top to see the spiral nature of the 'winding'.  It is important to provide a backing plate for best viewing of the apparatus with a camera.

Instructions:  The demonstration uses two concentric Plexiglas cylinders. The inner cylinder is solid and can be rotated on its vertical axis. The space between the cylinders is filled with glycerin. Using a syringe, the dark blue ink is released into the cylinder forming a vertical line. The ink should be as close as possible to the inner cylinder.  As the apparatus is small, use the video camera for class viewing.

Operation Instructions

Instructions:  If the line of dye is not already released into the cylinder, first take the syringe and squeeze some of the dark blue ink into the cylinder forming a vertical line.  Spin the inner cylinder slowly, which will move the line of ink into a winding sheet. Reverse the spin direction and the sheet returns to a line.  The viscosity of the glycerin is high enough that the motion is laminar and the apparent mixing of dye and fluid is reversible.
