1M40.15 - Pendulum and Peg
Demonstrate conservation of energy in a pendulum.
InstructionsA pendulum is set up such that its suspension cord strikes a peg just as it passes through the vertical. It is then observed that the bob rises an equal distance from the floor whether the length is shortened by the peg or not due to conservation of energy. The heavy yellow bob works well and it is kept wound up on a rod, so that to be used, it must only be unwound and clamped to a floor stand as shown. Set the peg height to exactly the lecture bench height then release the ball at the bench level. This configuration makes it very easy for the students to see and understand the set up.
