1J30.25 - Forces on a Taut Rope
Demonstrate that a rope held taut end to end can be easily deflected in the center by another student or a mass.
From the cabinet, retrieve the rope with a loop in the middle. Also get the 5 pound square mass with hook on top.
Have two students pull on either end of the rope. Hang the 5 pound mass from the center loop, and observe the deflection of the rope. (Alternate method: instead of adding the 5 pound mass, the professor can just push down on the center of the rope)
