Objective

Demonstrate (dramatically using the sparks off a grinding wheel) that a particle in circular motion will move in a straight line tangent to the circle when released. ​

Assembly Instructions

The motor with grinding wheel is clamped to the table so that the demonstrator is on left hand side as viewed by audience. The file should contact the wheel from below, not from above. In order to get good bright sparks, use the old file as the material being ground and bring it up to the edge of the wheel. At the point of contact, sparks will fly off in many directions but some of them will stick to the wheel temporarily and eventually fly off tangentially.​
