Demonstrate that the center of mass moves in a parabolic path while the object itself may move in a complicated motion about this center.

Assembly Instructions

A small dumbbell made up of a rod with two rubber balls at its ends, one light at the center of mass and another placed near a ball, is thrown across a darkened room. It can be thrown with both bulbs on simultaneously or with one bulb on at a time. Unscrew the bulbs immediately after using to save the batteries.

Operation Instructions

1   Turn off the room lights, and turn on the bulb near the small ball.
2   Throw the dumbbell through the classroom.
3   Observe that the path of the light orbits a parabola.
4   Turn on the light near the large ball and turn the other light off.
5   Throw the dumbbell, and observe that the light follows a parabola.
